The Nigerian Army has dismissed as false reports circulating on social media alleging that armed men attacked the residence of the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral.

In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the Army described the claim as misleading and unfounded.

According to the statement, the Army said its attention had been drawn to a Facebook post falsely alleging that Bishop Kukah’s residence and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral were attacked by armed men.

The military, however, categorically debunked the report, stressing that no such incident occurred anywhere in Sokoto State.

“The safety and security of Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral remain intact. Bishop Kukah is currently fulfilling his Easter duties without any disruption,” the statement said.

The Army further reassured residents that security agencies in the state remain fully committed to safeguarding lives and property, especially during the Easter period.

It added that 8 Division Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, has put robust security measures in place across Sokoto State and its entire area of responsibility to ensure a peaceful and secure Easter celebration.

The military urged the public to disregard the false report and rely only on verified information from credible sources.
