The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a mentally challenged woman and her newborn baby in Kwali Area Council of Abuja.

According to the Command, the rescue took place in the early hours of Thursday, April 3, 2026, when operatives of the Rapid Response Squad on routine patrol discovered the unidentified woman shortly after she gave birth by the roadside in Kwaita Village, Kwali.

Police said the report was received at about 12:30 a.m., prompting the Officer in Charge of the Gender Unit at Kwali Division to quickly mobilise a team to the scene. The woman and her baby girl were safely evacuated and taken to General Hospital, Kwali, where both received medical attention and were later discharged in stable condition.

In line with standard welfare procedures, the Officer in Charge of Welfare in Kwali Area Council, Mr. Sadiq Kwali, was contacted. The mother and child were subsequently handed over to him and relocated to the FCT Children’s Home in Wako, Gwagwalada Area Council, where they are expected to receive proper care and support.

Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, commended the officers involved for their swift response and professionalism. He specifically praised the patrol team for showing compassion and ensuring the safety of the woman and her newborn before the arrival of the Gender Unit.

The Commissioner also called on residents to remain vigilant, show empathy, and promptly report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines.

The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on April 4, 2026.
