The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against crime, recovering a total of seventeen (17) stolen vehicles and arresting fourteen (14) suspects in a series of coordinated operations across Abuja.
Addressing journalists at the Command Headquarters on April 15, 2026, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, said the achievements followed intensified intelligence-led policing, surveillance, and targeted raids carried out from March to date.
According to the Police Commissioner, the operations—conducted by divisions including Mabushi, Durumi, Maitama, and the Central Police Station—targeted criminal activities such as vehicle theft, “one chance” robberies, and the illegal removal of parked vehicles.
He disclosed that the arrested suspects were linked to multiple car theft syndicates operating within and outside the FCT. The police also recovered a wide range of vehicles, including Toyota Camry, Corolla, Hilux, Hyundai, Nissan SUVs, and Volkswagen models. Some of the recovered vehicles have already been returned to their rightful owners, while others remain in police custody pending proper identification.
In a related development, police operatives foiled a “one chance” robbery operation on April 10, 2026, along a secluded road in Abuja. Officers on patrol intercepted a suspicious vehicle, prompting an exchange of gunfire after the suspects attempted to flee. One suspect was arrested at the scene, while others escaped into nearby bushes.
During a search of the vehicle, two female victims were rescued after being found tied up in the back seat. One of the victims reported being sexually assaulted by a member of the gang. A follow-up operation led to the arrest of another suspect, who was later identified by the victims.
The Police Commissioner confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that all suspects will be charged to court upon completion.
CP Sanusi also raised concerns over the growing spread of false security information, warning residents and content creators against disseminating unverified reports capable of causing panic. He cited the recent arrest and arraignment of a social media content creator accused of fabricating gunshot sounds to falsely portray an attack within the FCT.
He emphasized that such actions constitute criminal offenses, including injurious falsehood and breach of public peace, and urged the public to verify security-related information through official channels.
The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, calling on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
