The President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, has reaffirmed the association’s commitment to empowering police families, widows of fallen officers and young girls through targeted welfare and empowerment programmes.
Mrs. Disu, who is also the wife of the Inspector-General of Police, stated that POWA under her leadership will continue to implement initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of women and children within the police community while strengthening support systems for surrounding communities.
Speaking during an empowerment and outreach programme organised by the association, Mrs. Disu explained that the initiative was designed to provide practical assistance through skills development, educational support, healthcare services and community engagement.
The programme brought together several beneficiaries, including widows of fallen police officers, women within the rank-and-file police community—from constables to inspectors—as well as residents of neighbouring communities.
Nearly 200 residents from surrounding communities also benefited from the outreach, which featured welfare support and basic health services.
Participants received medical screenings and vital health checks aimed at promoting early detection of health conditions and encouraging preventive healthcare among women and families.
Mrs. Disu said the programme reflects POWA’s broader commitment to supporting the welfare of police families and communities living around police formations.
“This is about standing with the families who have given so much in service to the nation. Supporting widows of our fallen heroes and empowering women within the police community is both a responsibility and a duty we must continue to uphold,” she said.
The outreach also focused on young girls from the Police Secondary School, particularly those aged 17 and above. The sessions were designed to inspire leadership, encourage academic ambition and build confidence among the students.
According to Mrs. Disu, empowering girls through education, mentorship and opportunity remains critical to building a stronger and more inclusive society.
“When we empower young girls with knowledge, mentorship and opportunity, we are shaping the leaders of tomorrow,” she added.
She further noted that POWA will continue to expand its empowerment initiatives through strategic partnerships and sustained programmes aimed at strengthening families, uplifting communities and contributing to national development.
