The Nigerian Army has operationalised the deployment of Forest Guards in Kebbi State as part of renewed efforts to strengthen community-based security and combat criminal activities across the North-West region.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West) Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, inaugurated the forest guards in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State and donated logistics support to enhance their operations.
According to a press statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army / Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the forest guards will operate under the control of the Nigerian Army.
During the operationalisation ceremony held at the Headquarters in Kangiwa, Arewa Local Government Area, the GOC presented logistics items including 10 brand-new motorcycles, 170 sleeping kits and essential food supplies to support the 170 forest guards.
Major General Koughna said the logistics support was aimed at improving mobility, welfare and operational effectiveness of the guards in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities within Kebbi State and the wider North-West region.
He explained that the motorcycles would enhance patrol coverage and enable rapid response to security threats, while the sleeping kits and food supplies would support the welfare and endurance of personnel deployed in remote locations.
The GOC also charged the newly inaugurated forest guards to remain disciplined, focused and committed to their responsibilities, stressing that victory against terrorism and banditry requires teamwork, synergy and sustained dedication.
He conveyed the good wishes of the Chief of Army Staff to the guards and cautioned them against using their weapons against law-abiding citizens.
Representing the Governor of Kebbi State, Dr Nasir Idris, the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Internal Security, Haliru Aliyu Wasabu, commended the Nigerian Army for its timely intervention and collaboration with the state government.
He described the donation as a clear demonstration of the Army’s commitment to restoring peace and security, while reaffirming the state government’s readiness to continue working closely with the military and other security agencies to decisively tackle criminality.
The donation and inauguration underscore ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army and Kebbi State Government to strengthen local security structures and consolidate gains against insurgency and banditry in the North-West.
