The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the Ekiti State Government have commenced a strategic partnership toward establishing an Aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) Depot, in a move aimed at boosting indigenous technical capacity, improving operational readiness, and deepening national development efforts.
The development was disclosed during a courtesy visit by the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji, to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, at the Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Abuja, on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
Speaking during the engagement, the CAS described the initiative as a major milestone in the Nigerian Air Force’s deliberate push for self-reliance in aircraft maintenance and the sustainable projection of airpower in support of national security objectives.
Air Marshal Aneke explained that Ekiti State emerged as a potential host location for the proposed depot due to its strong intellectual capital and growing reputation as a centre of knowledge and innovation.
He also commended the Ekiti State Government for allocating land for the establishment of a NAF base and related infrastructure, describing the move as a strategic investment in both security and socio-economic development.
According to him, the proposed MRO depot will not only strengthen the Nigerian Air Force’s technical capability but also create specialised employment opportunities, stimulate local industry, and significantly contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s aviation and engineering sectors.
The CAS further reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to expanding its operational footprint in Ekiti State as part of broader efforts to reinforce the security architecture across the South-West region.
In his remarks, Governor Oyebanji praised the Nigerian Air Force for its professionalism and steadfast commitment to national stability, assuring the Service of his administration’s full backing for initiatives aimed at advancing both security and economic prosperity.
He stressed that the proposed MRO depot and NAF base would not only improve Ekiti State’s security framework but also unlock investment opportunities, accelerate human capital development, and drive sustainable growth in the state.
Both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening strategic collaboration in pursuit of a safer, more resilient, and economically vibrant Nigeria.
