The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed his commitment to restoring public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force, declaring that misconduct, corruption, and abuse of authority within the Force will no longer be tolerated.
Speaking on Wednesday during his inaugural conference with strategic police managers at the Peacekeeping Conference Centre in Abuja, the IGP emphasized that the Police must remain a people-centered institution built on trust, fairness, and respect for all Nigerians.
Disu stated that every citizen, regardless of status, belief, or background, must be treated with dignity, warning that any conduct that undermines these principles weakens public confidence and erodes the legitimacy of the Force.
“The Nigeria Police Force is, first and foremost, the people’s police, and our continued relevance depends on the confidence the public places in us,” he said.
To strengthen accountability within the Force, the IGP announced plans to reinforce and insulate internal oversight mechanisms from undue influence. He said units such as the Force Provost, the Complaints Response Unit, and the X-Squad will be empowered to operate decisively and independently when investigating cases of misconduct, corruption, abuse of authority, or other forms of unprofessional behaviour.
According to him, the renewed approach is intended to ensure that no officer is shielded from disciplinary action when found culpable.
“The message must be clear: no officer is above the law,” Disu stressed.
He further encouraged citizens to feel safe and confident in reporting wrongdoing by police officers, while reminding personnel that loyalty to the Force should never mean covering up misconduct or tolerating indiscipline.
The IGP warned that rank, seniority, or position would not protect any officer found guilty of misconduct, adding that offenders would face swift disciplinary measures, including dismissal and prosecution where necessary.
Disu noted that his administration would act firmly, fairly, and transparently in order to deter misconduct, reinforce discipline within the ranks, and rebuild public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
