The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has commended journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for their vital role in public enlightenment and national development, while calling for stronger collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the media.
Disu made the remarks on Saturday during the congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, held in Abuja.
Addressing members of the union, the police chief described his relationship with journalists as one built on mutual respect, professionalism, and constructive engagement. He emphasised that media practitioners should be accorded the dignity they deserve as professionals whose work is central to shaping public discourse and deepening democratic governance.
According to the IGP, journalists should never be regarded or treated as beggars, noting that the media remains indispensable in keeping citizens informed and in holding institutions accountable.
He further stressed the need for closer cooperation between the police and the media, explaining that a stronger partnership would improve communication on security matters and help foster greater public trust in law enforcement.
Disu also urged both police personnel and journalists to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in the discharge of their responsibilities, noting that conduct and character leave enduring impressions on society.
In her response, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, congratulated the Inspector-General on his appointment and described him as a long-standing friend of the media.
She expressed confidence in his leadership of the Nigeria Police Force and assured him of the council’s readiness to work closely with the police in promoting balanced, accurate, and responsible reporting on security-related issues.
Ike also disclosed that the Inspector-General would be invited as a special guest at the council’s 2026 Press Week celebration.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the NUJ FCT Council to advancing responsible journalism and supporting initiatives that strengthen security and good governance in the Federal Capital Territory.
