Brigadier-General Lawal Bature Mohammed (retd), former Commander of the Zamfara Community Protection Guards (CPG), has died from injuries sustained during a bandit attack.

Popularly known as Dan Gusau, the retired senior military officer was reportedly shot by bandits last year and suffered severe bullet wounds in the attack.

Following the incident, he was flown to Egypt for advanced medical treatment as efforts were made to save his life.

While he was still undergoing recovery, former Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Muhammad Shehu Daligent (retd), was appointed as the new commander of the Zamfara Community Protection Guards.

In a related development, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal recently honoured families of fallen CPG personnel, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the governor also decorated 20 Community Protection Guards in recognition of their exceptional service, courage, and bravery.

The funeral prayer for the late Brigadier-General Mohammed was held on Thursday evening at Sabon Gari, Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.

He was thereafter laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.

The death of the former CPG commander has drawn tributes from residents and security stakeholders, who described him as a committed officer who dedicated himself to the fight against banditry and the protection of communities in Zamfara State.
