The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has directed the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME) to sustain rigorous, mission-oriented training aimed at producing highly competent military engineers capable of delivering effective combat support across various theatres of operation.
The directive was given on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, during the Army Chief’s maiden operational visit to the Headquarters of NASME in Makurdi, Benue State.
Lieutenant General Shaibu noted that NASME remains a critical pillar in generating the skilled manpower required for engineering tasks across formations and units of the Nigerian Army.
He stressed that training at the institution must remain realistic, practical, and aligned with contemporary operational realities to ensure quality output and improved combat effectiveness.
The Army Chief also reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare, accommodation, and overall living conditions of personnel within NASME Barracks. He stated that the welfare of troops remains central to maintaining high morale and operational efficiency.
Earlier in his remarks, the Commandant of NASME, Major General Idongesit Essien Ekpenyong, expressed appreciation to the COAS for his continuous support to the institution. He briefed the Army Chief on ongoing training activities, operational commitments, as well as key challenges affecting infrastructure and personnel welfare within the barracks.
Highlights of the visit included an operational briefing, the presentation of a commemorative memento to the COAS, and a group photograph with senior officers and personnel of the institution.
