The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an alleged case of child abuse involving a 7-year-old girl at the Kontagora Military Cantonment in Niger State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, came to light after a neighbouring soldier allegedly heard distress cries from an adjoining apartment. According to preliminary reports, the soldier gained access to the residence and discovered the child being physically assaulted by two sisters identified as relatives and custodians of the girl.
In a statement issued by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations at the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC), Major Godfrey Anebi Abakpa, initial findings suggest the child was allegedly punished over concerns about her earlier whereabouts.
The statement also indicated possible neglect, including claims that the child had been denied meals and restricted from using basic household facilities. Eyewitness accounts further alleged that similar incidents may have occurred previously despite earlier cautions.
The Army disclosed that the child had been living with her uncle’s family within the cantonment following the death of her father. She was reportedly brought to the barracks to receive care and continue her education.
Following the report, the Commander of NATRAC, Major General AGL Haruna, directed the NATRAC Military Police to immediately commence a comprehensive investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The child was promptly evacuated to the Kontagora Military Cantonment Medical Centre for medical evaluation and is currently said to be in stable condition. Pending the outcome of the investigation, temporary custody of the child has been entrusted to a family within the cantonment who volunteered to provide care and support.
The NATRAC authority reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and protection of children and dependants of military personnel, assuring the public that appropriate sanctions would be applied in line with extant regulations once the investigation is concluded.
