President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has formally declared open the 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA 2026) in Asaba, Delta State, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to building a more professional, disciplined and performance-driven Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the opening ceremony held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on Saturday, the Special Guest of Honour, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, represented by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) reiterated his administration’s unwavering support for the Force in strengthening national security, unity and development.
He described the hosting of the Games in Delta State as symbolic, noting the state’s reputation as a leading hub of sporting excellence in Nigeria. According to him, Delta’s sustained investment in grassroots sports development, modern infrastructure and athlete grooming reflects purposeful governance and highlights the role of sports in youth empowerment and national pride.
The Presidednt emphasised that the theme of this year’s Games, “Beyond the Badge: Excellence in Action,” and the slogan “Discipline, Dignity and Dedication” represent the core values required for effective policing. He said these ideals go beyond sports and form the moral foundation of professionalism, integrity and public trust in law enforcement.
He noted that the Police Games are not merely athletic competitions but a demonstration of resilience, teamwork, preparedness and service to country. He stressed that sport remains a strategic tool for strengthening institutional cohesion, enhancing operational readiness and promoting stability.
Highlighting the historical role of the Nigeria Police in sports development since 1861, the President said the Games, which began as an athletics championship in the 1940s, have continued to promote fitness, solidarity and community engagement while reinforcing discipline within the Force.
He also acknowledged the contributions of notable police athletes such as Olympic gold medalist DCP Chioma Ajunwa and other distinguished sports personalities who have brought honour to Nigeria in international competitions. He added that such achievements underscore the link between discipline in service and excellence in global sporting arenas.
President Tinubu commended the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for sustaining sporting initiatives, including the IGP Open National Mixed Martial Arts Championship, describing sports as an effective instrument for character building and esprit de corps within the Force.
He further stressed that a physically fit and mentally resilient Police Force remains indispensable to national security and the successful implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda. He noted that the Renewed Hope National Development Plan (2026–2030) aligns security with economic growth, human capital development and national competitiveness.
He urged participating officers to compete with honour, fairness and mutual respect, reminding them that their conduct both on and off the field would reflect the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and ensuring that security agencies are well-equipped and motivated to meet emerging challenges.
Declaring the Games open, he expressed hope that the competition would be peaceful, inspiring and further strengthen unity within the Force while deepening public confidence in the Nigeria Police.
The 15th Biennial Police Games are expected to bring together police officers from across the country in various sporting events aimed at promoting fitness, unity and professionalism within the Force.
