The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has charged officers and soldiers of the 3 Division, Nigerian Army, to remain disciplined, committed, and professional, stressing that their operations in Plateau State are vital to Nigeria’s national stability.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu gave the charge on Monday during an operational visit to the Headquarters of 3 Division in Jos, where he addressed personnel on the evolving security situation in the state and the importance of sustained professionalism in the conduct of military duties.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele.
According to the statement, the COAS described discipline as the cornerstone of military service, reminding personnel that enlistment in the Army is voluntary and anchored on the noble responsibility of safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and internal security.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu said he received comprehensive briefings from the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division, on operational and welfare challenges facing troops in Plateau State, adding that key concerns had been identified and addressed by Army Headquarters. He noted that the Army is providing essential combat enablers to ensure troops are adequately equipped, while reaffirming that personnel welfare remains a top priority.
“The welfare of our troops is critical. We will continue to provide the enabling environment for you to do your job properly,” the COAS said.
He urged younger soldiers to respect the chain of command and seek guidance from their superiors, emphasizing the responsibility of officers to mentor subordinates toward professional development and successful military careers.
The Army Chief also underscored the importance of physical fitness and mental alertness, noting that deliberate measures are in place to prepare personnel for the rigours of operations.
Highlighting leadership at all levels, Lt. Gen. Shaibu described Senior Non-Commissioned Officers as the crucial link between officers and soldiers, urging them to provide effective middle-level leadership and uphold military standards.
On ongoing operations in Plateau State, he described the security environment as unique and assured troops that Operation Enduring Peace is being properly guided and supported to achieve its mandate. He further encouraged personnel to channel grievances through appropriate command channels, assuring that legitimate concerns would receive prompt attention.
As part of the visit, the COAS commissioned two blocks of 30 flats for Non-Commissioned Officers and a separate residential block for officers at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, as part of ongoing efforts to improve welfare and living conditions.
He concluded by reaffirming that the sacrifices of officers and soldiers are appreciated by the nation, urging them to remain proud of their service and to discharge their duties with honour and professionalism.
