Troops of 13 Brigade, Nigerian Army have successfully rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, following a hijacking incident involving a passenger boat operating along the Nigeria–Cameroon waterways on 11 January 2026.

According to a statement signed by Major Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 13 Brigade, the passengers were abducted by suspected sea pirates along the Kombo Fishing Port within Cameroon’s waterways. The criminals reportedly operated in two speedboats and a wooden boat.

Upon receiving a distress call, troops of 13 Brigade deployed from Ikang swiftly pursued the assailants. An exchange of fire ensued, during which one of the pirates’ speedboats capsized, forcing the criminals to abandon their victims and flee into the surrounding creeks.

All 18 passengers were rescued unharmed.

Commending the troops for their swift and professional response, the Commander, 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General P. O. Alimikhena, said the successful operation reflects the courage and unwavering commitment of the soldiers to protecting lives and securing the waterways.

“This operation demonstrates our resolve to dominate the operational environment and safeguard citizens against criminal elements,” he stated.

The Brigade Commander further urged residents to support security efforts by providing timely and credible information, stressing that community cooperation remains vital to sustaining security across Cross River State.

The operation underscores 13 Brigade’s continued commitment to ensuring safety and security across regional waterways.
