The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has paid glowing tribute to fallen heroes of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), describing their sacrifice as the foundation upon which the nation’s peace and unity rest.
In a goodwill message marking the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day 2026, the CDS said the solemn occasion provides Nigerians the opportunity to honour the courage, patriotism, and ultimate sacrifice of officers and men who laid down their lives in defence of the country’s sovereignty. He noted that the legacy of the fallen remains indelible, adding that their families’ resilience in the face of loss continues to inspire the nation.
Commending serving personnel across all theatres of operation, the CDS lauded their professionalism, discipline, and selfless service, assuring them that the Armed Forces would “give no quarter” to threats against Nigeria’s security. He reaffirmed that the military remains resolute in rooting out local and trans-border threats, vowing that adversaries would continue to face decisive resistance.
General Oluyede reiterated that troop welfare remains a top priority, anchored on his Military Strategic Philosophy focused on enhanced jointness, improved welfare, sound administration, and a whole-of-government approach to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and prosperity. He emphasized sustained collaboration with other security agencies and civil authorities, guided by lessons from veterans.
The CDS expressed deep appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for steadfast leadership and unwavering support to the military, assuring Nigerians of the Armed Forces’ enduring commitment to democratic values, peace, and stability.
He also acknowledged the vital role of military families, particularly spouses who “man the home front,” enabling personnel to serve with focus and confidence.
Calling on Nigerians to embrace unity and reject divisive rhetoric, the CDS urged citizens to wear the remembrance emblem with pride as a symbol of gratitude to the nation’s heroes—past and present.
“Together,” he said, “we honour the past, celebrate our achievements, and work towards a future defined by enduring peace, stability, and prosperity for every Nigerian.”
