Suspected bandits have killed an inspector of the Nigeria Police Force following an ambush on a police patrol team in the Budo Masalasi border post area of Oyo State.

The incident, which occurred over the weekend, has thrown the affected community into tension amid growing concerns over violent attacks in the area.

Sources disclosed that the patrol team was on routine security duty when armed assailants suddenly attacked and opened fire on the officers. During the exchange, the inspector sustained fatal injuries and later died.

Other members of the patrol team were also injured and have been taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Their current conditions were not immediately disclosed.

The identity of the slain officer is being withheld pending official notification of his family.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Mr Olayinka Ayanlade, said the command has launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

According to him, the Commissioner of Police has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the attack to ensure those responsible are apprehended.

“There was an attack on police operatives during which an inspector, while courageously repelling the assault, paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” Ayanlade said.

“Immediately the incident was reported, the Commissioner of Police directed an intensive manhunt and a thorough investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that some of the attackers sustained gunshot injuries, and operatives are currently tracking them,” he added.

The police spokesperson assured residents that enhanced security measures are being implemented across the state to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property.

He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and assist security agencies by reporting individuals with gunshot wounds, those seeking suspicious medical treatment, or unfamiliar persons seeking refuge in their communities.
