President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday held a closed-door meeting with the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja—an engagement that has stirred renewed public interest given the country’s current security trajectory.
General Musa, clad in traditional northern attire, arrived at the State House in the early evening and was received discreetly before proceeding straight to the President’s office. Though the Presidency provided no official details of their discussions, the encounter marks his first visit to the Villa since his removal from office in October.
His exit, which came without an official explanation, had generated speculation across defence and political circles, especially against the backdrop of unverified reports hinting at an aborted coup attempt earlier in the year. While the Presidency neither confirmed nor commented on such claims, Musa’s sudden departure remained a subject of conversation in national security discourse.
Monday’s meeting therefore comes at a pivotal moment. Nigeria is grappling with a resurgence of violent attacks and kidnappings, testing the capacity and coordination of security agencies nationwide. In recent weeks, the country has witnessed the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, a deadly attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State, and the kidnapping of Catholic schoolchildren in Minna, Niger State—incidents that have amplified calls for a more cohesive and strategic security response.
Although the content of the engagement between President Tinubu and the former defence chief remains confidential, analysts suggest it may not be unconnected to the ongoing search for solutions to Nigeria’s worsening security landscape. General Musa, who served during some of the country’s most complex counterterrorism operations, is seen as a key figure with deep institutional knowledge of Nigeria’s defence architecture.
The significance of his presence at the Villa—after weeks of silence—has naturally sparked speculation about whether the President may be seeking consultations, clarifications, or strategic insights from the retired general.
For now, the nation is left with questions rather than answers. But in a period marked by heightened threats to national stability, the quiet meeting between the Commander-in-Chief and his former defence chief may signal that crucial behind-the-scenes conversations are underway to recalibrate Nigeria’s security posture.
