The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has expressed shock and deep sorrow over the death of one of its members, Mr. Sunday Olatuyi, who was fatally knocked down by a vehicle at the Lugbe Bus Stop, Abuja.
In a press statement issued by the Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the union said Olatuyi was hit by a Toyota Corolla with registration number ABUJA RBC 128 AM on Saturday night, December 20, 2025, while returning home from work. He was reportedly in the company of a friend at the time of the incident.
Olatuyi, aged 40, hailed from Odo-Oro Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State. He is survived by his wife, a seven-month-old daughter, Eniola, and his aged mother.
Until his untimely death, Olatuyi was a Senior Cameraman with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN Television) and had previously worked with Ben TV. He was described by the union as a dedicated professional and committed union member whose contributions to journalism and union activities would be deeply missed.
The NUJ FCT Council condemned the circumstances surrounding the incident and raised concern over the increasing cases of reckless driving and disregard for human lives on roads within the Federal Capital Territory.
The council called for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the incident and urged the Nigeria Police Force to ensure the prompt prosecution of the driver involved in accordance with the law. According to the union, justice must be seen to be done to serve as a deterrent to other road users.
The NUJ FCT Council also extended its heartfelt condolences to Olatuyi’s family, the management and staff of ADBN Television, the Correspondents’ Chapel, the Society of Practicing Cameramen, as well as his friends and colleagues.
The council assured the bereaved family of its solidarity and support and pledged to follow up on the case until justice is served.
“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
