The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Oufemi Oluyede, on behalf of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), has commended troops for their bravery, professionalism, and swift response in the successful rescue of the remaining students of St. Mary School, Papiri, in Niger State.
In a press statement, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said the operation underscored the AFN’s unwavering commitment to national security and the protection of innocent lives. He noted that the sacrifices and dedication of the troops have justified the confidence Nigerians repose in the Armed Forces.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) also paid profound tribute to generations of military veterans whose dedication, sacrifice, and professionalism laid the foundation of the modern AFN. According to the statement, these men and women served with courage through periods of nation-building, internal security challenges, peacekeeping missions, and institutional reforms, shaping doctrine, strengthening command structures, and instilling enduring values of discipline, loyalty, and service before self.
“The progress and capabilities evident in today’s AFN are a direct reflection of their foresight and resolve,” the DHQ stated, adding that current officers and personnel accept the responsibility to preserve these standards, adapt to new realities, and lead with integrity.
In its Weekly Press Release on Ongoing Military Operations for the Week Ending 12–22 December 2025, the DHQ said the AFN maintained a high tempo of coordinated, intelligence-led operations across all theatres during December, resulting in the disruption of criminal networks, recovery of arms and ammunition, rescue of abducted persons, and the restoration of relative calm in several communities. The military assured continued strong presence during the festive period to protect citizens and critical infrastructure.
The AFN reiterated its commitment to strict adherence to rules of engagement and respect for human rights, while appreciating public cooperation.
Theatre Updates
North East – Operation HADIN KAI:
Troops repelled an ISWAP attack on a Forward Operating Base in Mairari, neutralising two Vehicle-Borne IEDs and inflicting casualties on terrorists. Weapons, ammunition, motorcycles, communication devices, combat gear, and medical supplies were recovered. An IED along the Damboa–Komala axis was safely detonated, and suspects supplying logistics to terrorists were arrested. Seven collaborators were apprehended, three kidnap victims rescued, and terrorist camps destroyed.
North West – Operation FANSAN YAMMA:
Operations across Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, and Niger States led to the neutralisation of several terrorists, arrest of eight suspects, and rescue of four kidnap victims. Weapons, vehicles, and livestock were recovered. Troops also intercepted ₦9 million intended for ransom payments in Kaduna State, with efforts ongoing to apprehend perpetrators.
North Central – Operations ENDURING PEACE and WHIRL STROKE:
In Plateau, Kaduna, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Kogi, and Kwara States, troops neutralised criminals, arrested suspects, and rescued dozens of kidnap victims. Notably, 43 abducted persons were rescued under Operation WHIRL STROKE. Two impostors impersonating the Chief of Army Staff were arrested in Edo State.
South-South – Operation DELTA SAFE:
Troops foiled oil theft worth over ₦15.6 million, destroyed three illegal refining sites, and arrested oil thieves and gunrunners across Bayelsa, Rivers, and Delta States. Stolen crude oil, AGO, PMS, and arms were recovered.
South East – Operation UDO KA:
Troops conducted offensive operations against IPOB/ESN elements, arresting suspects in parts of Anambra State.
The DHQ reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ resolve to sustain operational momentum and adapt to emerging threats, urging Nigerians and partners to support security initiatives, especially in light of the emergency declared by the President and Commander-in-Chief.
“Together, we can overcome this challenge and reaffirm our commitment to peace, resilience, and progress,” the statement concluded.
