Nigeria Condemns Military Coup in Guinea-Bissau, Calls for Immediate Restoration of Constitutional Order

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the military coup in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an “unconstitutional change of government” that threatens democratic stability in West Africa.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said Nigeria received the news of the military insurrection with “profound dismay and deep concern.” He stressed that the takeover violates the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which prohibits the seizure of power through unconstitutional means.

Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and demanded the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order. The government also called for the safety and release of all individuals detained during the uprising, as well as the protection of democratic institutions in the country.

Of particular concern is the safety of international election observers still present in Guinea-Bissau. The Ministry urged the coup leaders to guarantee their security and ensure they are not harmed or impeded in any way.

The statement emphasized that all parties should exercise restraint, embrace peaceful dialogue, and respect the will of Guinea-Bissau’s citizens as expressed through the recently concluded elections.

Nigeria warned that those responsible for the coup will be held accountable for actions that could destabilize the nation and reverse its democratic gains.

As a leading member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria vowed to collaborate with regional and international partners to ensure a swift return to constitutional governance and to safeguard peace and stability across the African continent.
