A joint team of operatives from the Nigerian Army and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) came under attack on Monday, October 27, 2025, by suspected cannabis cultivators in Ukpuje, a community in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State notorious for large-scale cannabis farming.

According to a statement by the Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the team was ambushed by the cultivators in the early hours of the day, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. He said the operatives, who had embarked on a routine operation to dismantle illicit cannabis farms, were forced to retreat for safety after coming under heavy assault.

“One officer was struck by a sharp object on the hand. The officer has since received medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery,” Ofoyeju stated.

He commended the bravery and professionalism of both NDLEA officers and the army personnel involved in the operation, noting that the incident highlights the risks faced by law enforcement agencies in their efforts to curb drug-related crimes.

“Our mission is to ensure that illegal drug activities are disrupted, particularly in areas notorious for drug cultivation. Although we faced resistance, we are grateful that no lives were lost and our team carried out the operation with courage,” he said.

The NDLEA Commander reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to intensifying the war against drug cultivation and trafficking across Edo State. He described the Ukpuje raid as part of a broader national strategy to promote public safety and eradicate illicit drug activities.

He assured that despite the attack, the NDLEA would not relent in its drive towards a drug-free society, emphasizing that operations like these remain vital to the nation’s anti-narcotics campaign.
