Commends IGP Egbetokun, FCT Command for Upholding Human Rights and Rule of Law
The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has commended the Nigeria Police Force for the professional and constitutional manner in which it managed the recent protest convened by activist Omoyele Sowore to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Olaniyan, the PCRC applauded the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, the Police Management Team, and the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for what it described as the “swift and measured response” of the Police during the demonstration.
Olaniyan noted that the conduct of the Police reflected the renewed professionalism, restraint, and respect for human rights under the current leadership of the Force.
He also commended the prompt arraignment of arrested protesters within 24 hours, describing it as a clear demonstration of the Force’s commitment to due process and the rule of law. He urged the Police to ensure diligent prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others “hell-bent on destabilizing the country.”
The PCRC further lauded residents of the Southeast for their maturity and understanding, emphasizing that the resolution of the Nnamdi Kanu issue can only be achieved through lawful, political, or judicial means—not by confrontation or violence.
The committee reaffirmed its continuous support for the Nigeria Police Force in promoting peace, security, and community partnership across the country. It also urged citizens to always channel their grievances through constitutional and peaceful means.
Meanwhile, normalcy has returned to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following Monday’s protest, though security presence remained heavy around key government areas. Our correspondent observed that access roads to the Federal Secretariat and the Three Arms Zone were still barricaded, with Unity Fountain—the take-off point of the protest—sealed off by security operatives.
