According to a statement signed by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Madam Esene passed away on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a protracted illness. She was 64 years old.
Until her demise, the veteran journalist had retired from the Federal Ministry of Information and later joined the True Verdict Online Newspaper. She hailed from Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The NUJ FCT Council described the late media icon as “a dedicated and passionate professional whose contributions to the advancement of women journalists and ethical journalism will be remembered for years to come.”
“The death of Madam Esene is a monumental loss to the journalism profession, particularly to women in the media who looked up to her as a trailblazer, mentor, and advocate for gender equity in the newsroom and society at large,” the statement noted.
Oyekunle further stated that the Council was deeply pained by her passing, recalling her as “a pillar of strength and inspiration to many journalists, particularly the younger generation.”
“Her leadership, courage, and commitment to the ideals of truth and fairness in journalism remain exemplary,” he said.
The NUJ FCT Council emphasized that her death came at a time when her experience and wisdom were most needed to strengthen professionalism and inclusivity within Nigeria’s media landscape.
During her tenure as NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Madam Esene was known for her uncommon passion, professionalism, and dedication to promoting the welfare of women journalists and upholding ethical standards in the profession.
