NAF Launches Probe into Alleged Civilian Incident, Destroys Illegal Oil Refining Sites in Rivers

In a precise and intelligence-driven operation on October 7, 2025, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) successfully disrupted several clusters of illegal crude oil refining sites deep within the creeks of Etche Local Government Area, Rivers State.

According to Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, the operation was executed by the Air Component of ongoing counter–oil theft missions aimed at tackling economic sabotage and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta region.

During the mission, NAF aircraft identified active illegal refining sites concealed within a densely forested area near Owaza. The locations, isolated and devoid of visible human presence, were confirmed through credible intelligence and detailed aerial surveillance. The aircrew subsequently engaged the targets with precision strikes, effectively neutralising the sites and halting ongoing illicit operations.

However, following the air raid, the NAF’s attention was drawn to a statement by a group alleging that the airstrikes affected a local gin distillery in Umuebele, though no casualties were reported. In line with its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMR-AP), the NAF has commenced a verification process to ascertain the claims.

Air Commodore Ejodame reaffirmed that the Nigerian Air Force remains committed to upholding international best practices, ensuring transparency and accountability in all operations.

He further emphasized that the Service will continue to carry out its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and supporting other security agencies in combating criminal activities — with operations that are intelligence-driven, precise, and conducted with utmost regard for civilian safety.
