The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the arrest of a suspected commander of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), identified as Gentle, who had been on the troops’ wanted list alongside eight others.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, disclosed this during the weekly media briefing in Abuja, noting that the arrests were made by troops of Operation UDO KA during sustained offensive operations between 8 and 13 October 2025 in Owerri West and Mbaitoli LGAs of Imo State, and Izzi and Ohaukwu LGAs of Ebonyi State.
He said weapons, ammunition, and vehicles were recovered from the suspects, adding that troops maintained an aggressive operational posture across the theatre.
In a related development, troops apprehended a female IPOB/ESN collaborator and logistics supplier in Umunneochi LGA of Abia State on 13 October 2025. During her arrest, three children were rescued from her custody. Investigations revealed that the children are biological offspring of a wanted IPOB/ESN leader, Maduabuchi Nwankwo, also known as Emergency, who is believed to be her relation.
Major General Kangye further confirmed the prosecution of four suspects arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Jos South LGA of Plateau State on 8 October 2025. The suspects were charged with conspiracy and theft, pleaded guilty, and were sentenced to one year in prison each.
Meanwhile, troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE intensified operations in the North Central region during the week under review. Between 8 and 14 October 2025, troops responded to multiple distress calls and engaged terrorists in Riyom, Jos South, Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Mangu, and Jos East LGAs of Plateau State, as well as Jema’a and Zangon Kataf LGAs of Kaduna State.
During the encounters, several extremists were neutralized, while 11 suspects were arrested. Recovered items included assorted weapons, ammunition, motorcycles, and vehicles.
Major General Kangye commended the troops’ professionalism and resilience, assuring that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute in eliminating criminal elements and restoring lasting peace across the country.
