The Delta State Police Command has recorded a series of operational breakthroughs across Asaba and its environs, following coordinated, intelligence-led operations by officers of the ‘B’ Division Asaba, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and the Eagle Net Special Squad (ENSS).
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, the string of successful operations, which took place between 1st and 3rd October 2025, led to the arrest of several suspects, the recovery of firearms, and the interception of a large quantity of suspected illicit drugs.
1. Arrest of Suspected Armed Robber/Cultist and Recovery of Locally Made Pistol
On 1st October 2025, operatives from B Division Asaba, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Edewor Akponegware, responded swiftly to a distress call reporting a robbery incident around the Bonsac axis of Asaba. A female victim had been robbed at gunpoint by two male suspects.
Acting on intelligence and with support from local vigilantes, the team conducted a strategic sweep of the area, which led to the arrest of one suspect, identified as Amara Nwako (21), an indigene of Oko. A locally made pistol was recovered at the scene, while his accomplice escaped into an uncompleted building. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect may be linked to the Arobaga secret cult. The suspect remains in custody as efforts to apprehend his fleeing partner continue.
2. Arrest of Suspected Drug Peddler and Interception of Illicit Drugs
In a separate operation on 2nd October 2025, operatives of the Eagle Net Special Squad, led by SP Danyaya Yunusa, in collaboration with the office of the Executive Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Illicit Drugs and Human Trafficking, intercepted a truck with registration number 3BGT 18LG along a major route in Asaba.
The vehicle, driven by Dennis Uruma (52), a native of Igalamela Local Government Area, Kogi State, was found loaded with a large quantity of suspected illicit drugs. The driver was immediately arrested, and the truck impounded. Counting and measurement of the seized exhibits are currently ongoing as investigations progress.
3. Arrest of Suspected Armed Robbers/Cultists and Recovery of Fabricated Beretta Pistol
On 3rd October 2025, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), led by Commander CSP Nosa Alex, acting on credible intelligence, raided a suspected criminal hideout around the Basket Market area of Asaba.
During the raid, three suspects—Rabbi Godwin (25), Lucky Nanakumo (20), and David Igwe (19)—were arrested. A search of the premises led to the recovery of a fabricated Beretta pistol, which has been secured as evidence. The suspects are currently in RRS custody as investigators intensify efforts to trace other gang members and recover additional weapons.
CP Abaniwonda Reiterates Zero Tolerance for Crime
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended the operatives for their professionalism and dedication. He reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on violent crime, cultism, armed robbery, and drug trafficking.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and to provide the police with timely and credible information to help sustain the momentum against criminal elements. The CP also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to working closely with relevant security agencies and community partners to dismantle criminal networks, recover weapons, and cut off drug supply chains across the state.
