Anambra Police Warn Against Use of Vehicles Without Number Plates Ahead of Governorship Election

As preparations intensify for the November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has issued a stern warning against the indiscriminate use of vehicles without number plates or with covered registration numbers across the state.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Commissioner described the practice as a grave security concern that poses significant risks, especially at a time when security agencies are working round the clock to ensure a safe and credible election.

According to CP Orutugu, unregistered or obscured vehicles are often exploited by criminals to perpetrate crimes, evade arrest, and disrupt public peace. He emphasized that such vehicles would henceforth be impounded, and their owners prosecuted in line with existing laws.

To this end, the Commissioner has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Tactical Commanders to intensify patrols, conduct thorough Stop-and-Search operations, and ensure strict enforcement of the directive across the state.

The Command also appealed to residents to cooperate with security personnel by complying with all traffic and security regulations. It urged the public to report suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency hotlines — 112 or 07039194332.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order before, during, and after the election, ensuring that Ndi Anambra exercise their civic rights in a peaceful and secure environment.
