In 1955, a small group of pioneering women made history by joining the Nigeria Police Force, breaking barriers in a male-dominated profession. Seventy years later, their legacy endures — embodied by generations of female officers who continue to serve with integrity, courage, and compassion.
As the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) marks 70 years of women in policing, the institution reflects on decades of transformation, resilience, and progress. Under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the milestone will be commemorated with a two-day celebration from December 3rd to 4th, 2025, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the event highlights not only the accomplishments of women in uniform but also their critical role in modern policing and community trust-building.
“This milestone underscores the vital role of women in strengthening law enforcement and fostering public confidence across the nation,” he noted.
From administrative desks to command centers, from crime scenes to peacekeeping missions, Nigerian policewomen have steadily risen through the ranks, earning respect and recognition at home and abroad. Their journey has been marked by challenges, perseverance, and groundbreaking achievements.
Over the years, female officers have led major investigations, commanded tactical units, and contributed to peacekeeping operations under the United Nations. They have shown that policing is not only about enforcement but also about empathy, mediation, and understanding — values that women in the Force continue to exemplify.
The IGP, commended the invaluable contributions of women to the operational effectiveness and public image of the Force.
“Their dedication and compassion remain integral to the foundation of policing in Nigeria,” he said. “They have redefined service with integrity, empathy, and excellence.”
The 70th anniversary celebration will feature a national lecture, historical exhibition, panel discussions, and community outreach programmes designed to spotlight the achievements of women and inspire younger officers. It also serves as a platform to discuss gender inclusivity, professional growth, and mentorship in law enforcement.
Beyond commemoration, the event aligns with IGP Egbetokun’s vision for a more inclusive, professional, and capacity-driven Police Force, where women continue to play strategic roles in shaping the institution’s future.
As the Nigeria Police Force celebrates this milestone, it pays tribute to all female officers — serving and retired — whose courage, professionalism, and compassion have not only enhanced national security but also humanized policing itself.
