The Nigerian Army has denied reports alleging that its troops are harassing and intimidating residents of Ochon community in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State amid a land dispute with neighboring Alesi community in Ikom Local Government Area.
Racting to the allegations, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 82 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, described the reports as “false, misleading, and aimed at discrediting the tireless efforts of troops working to maintain peace in the area.”
According to Ayeni, troops of 245 Battalion are deployed in the affected areas strictly for internal security operations to protect lives, secure critical infrastructure, and maintain public order.
“82 Division categorically refutes the allegation in its entirety. Our troops have no stake or interest in the ownership, control, or settlement of the land dispute between Alesi and Ochon communities. Their mandate is solely to ensure peace and prevent a breakdown of law and order,” Ayeni said
He explained that the recent clashes between the two communities on 19 September 2025 prompted the swift deployment of troops to prevent further violence and restore normalcy.
The spokesman reaffirmed the Division’s neutrality, stressing that its operations are carried out in full compliance with constitutional provisions and respect for human rights.
Ayeni urged community leaders, youths, and stakeholders to embrace lawful and peaceful avenues to resolve their differences, warning against attempts to spread falsehoods that could escalate tensions.
“We urge the public to disregard false reports intended to undermine the peace support efforts of our troops. Members of the public are encouraged to provide credible information on any security threat or misconduct by personnel through established reporting channels for prompt action,” he added.
The 82 Division also pledged to continue working closely with other security agencies, civil authorities, and traditional institutions to ensure lasting peace and stability in Cross River State.
The Alesi and Ochon communities have been embroiled in a longstanding land dispute that has periodically resulted in violent clashes, threatening peace and security in the region.
