In the history of the Nigerian Army, few names resonate with inspiration and trailblazing achievements like that of Major General Abimbola Olatilewa Amusu (Rtd.). As Nigeria’s second woman to attain the rank of Major General, her career stands as a testament to resilience, excellence, and service to the nation.
Born with a passion for medicine and leadership, Major General Amusu began her illustrious military journey in June 1982, when she was commissioned into the Nigerian Army as a Second Lieutenant. Over the decades, she rose through the ranks with remarkable dedication, leaving an indelible mark on military medical services in Nigeria.
From 2015 to 2018, she achieved yet another historic milestone when she became the second female officer to command the Nigerian Army Medical Corps (NAMC). In this capacity, she provided strategic leadership, overseeing medical operations and improving healthcare delivery for troops and their families. Her tenure was marked by reforms that strengthened the corps’ capacity to support military operations and humanitarian missions.
A highly educated officer, Major General Amusu holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Health Management from Lagos State University. Her commitment to professional development extended beyond her service, as she also became an examiner with the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, mentoring future generations of medical professionals.
Her service to humanity reached beyond Nigeria’s borders. In 1994, she participated in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Somalia, demonstrating her courage and international service to peace and stability.
After 36 years of dedicated service, Major General Amusu retired from the Nigerian Army in December 2018, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and inspiration for women in the armed forces.
