The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that over 2.5 million Nigerians have taken advantage of its online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) portal within the first two weeks of the exercise.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, a total of 2,532,062 Nigerians pre-registered online as of Sunday, August 31, 2025.

The Commission disclosed that of this number, 1,218,482 (48.12%) are male while 1,313,580 (51.88%) are female. Young people between 18 and 34 years dominate the online pre-registration with 1,602,484 (63.29%), while students account for 647,528 (25.57%).

Olumekun explained that the online platform, introduced in 2021, allows Nigerians to commence registration from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, including weekends. However, he stressed that all online pre-registrants must physically complete the process at INEC’s 811 State and Local Government area offices nationwide, where their fingerprints and facial biometrics will be captured. Without this step, the online registration remains invalid.

On in-person registration, the Commission said the option was provided for Nigerians without access to online facilities or those who prefer physical registration. The centres, which opened on Monday, August 25, 2025, recorded 72,274 registrants in the first five days. Of this figure, 35,622 (49.29%) were male and 36,652 (50.71%) female. The majority, 54,718 (75.71%), were aged 18 to 34, while students accounted for 30,953 (42.83%).

INEC added that detailed statistics by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability status have been uploaded on its official website and platforms for public access.

The Commission commended citizens for their enthusiastic response and acknowledged the contributions of civic groups that have mobilised Nigerians to participate in the voter registration exercise.
