The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has approved a major restructuring of police formations in Benue State with the creation of two new Area Commands and the upgrade of five Police Stations to Divisional status.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the move followed a comprehensive security assessment of the state, particularly in troubled Local Government Areas where police presence has become critical. The restructuring, he noted, is designed to close operational gaps, improve police visibility, and strengthen security in difficult terrains.
The newly established Area Commands include Daudu Area Command, which will oversee Guma, Daudu, Yelwata, and Agan Police Divisions, and Naka Area Command, which will supervise Naka, Apa, Agatu, and Okpokolo Police Divisions. Similarly, Police Stations in Ayilamo, Yelwata, Jato-Aka, Okpokolo, and Agan have been upgraded to full Divisions.
The IGP explained that the adjustment would enable quicker responses to distress calls, faster conflict resolution, and improved grassroots policing. He directed the Commissioner of Police in Benue State, alongside officers to be deployed to the new commands, to demonstrate professionalism and renewed commitment to securing lives and property.
Egbetokun also called on the government and residents of Benue to continue supporting the Police, stressing that such collaboration is vital for lasting peace.
He further instructed Commissioners of Police in other states facing similar terrain-related challenges to devise practical, community-driven policing strategies. The IGP assured them of the full backing of Force Headquarters in terms of resources and operational support
