AWCN Course 9/2025 Participants Undertake Operational Theatre Visit to Sector 1, Operation FANSAN YAMMA

Participants of Course 9/2025 of the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) have embarked on an operational theatre visit to Sector 1 of Joint Task Force Operation FANSAN YAMMA in Kaduna, as part of their academic and professional training exposure.

A statement by Lieutenant Colonel Shuaib Umar, Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Headquarters 1 Division, noted that the visit was hosted by the Division to deepen participants’ understanding of counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in the North West.

The delegation, led by the Commandant of AWCN, Major General Umar Mohammed Alkali, urged participants to apply the practical knowledge gained from the tour in future command and staff responsibilities.

Course Coordinator and Faculty member, Brigadier General Akinkunmi Oyewunmi Odubiyi, disclosed that 46 senior officers were involved in the exercise. They include two officers of the Nigerian Navy, one from the Nigerian Air Force, and five from allied countries such as The Gambia and Chad, alongside faculty members of the College.

The visit featured lectures and interactive sessions on the roles of Air and Maritime components in supporting land operations against terrorists, while safeguarding civilians and critical infrastructure. Participants were also briefed on both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches employed in Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which spans Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto, and other states within the Area of Responsibility (AOR).

Highlights of the visit included operational briefings, lectures, interactive sessions, and a courtesy call on the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division.
