President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday received the remains of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari as his body arrived at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina from London, where he died on Sunday at the age of 82.

The late President’s body was accompanied on the flight by Vice President Kashim Shettima and a delegation of senior Federal Government officials.

Upon arrival, they were met by a solemn crowd led by President Ahmed Tinubu, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, members of the Federal Executive Council, and members of the Buhari family.

The former President, who served Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, died after a brief illness while receiving medical care in the United Kingdom.

The burial, conducted in accordance with Islamic rites, concluded a period of national mourning for a leader who served the country both as a military Head of State and as a civilian president.

The funeral prayer, led by the Chief Imam of Katsina State, took place at 5:50 p.m., after which Buhari’s body was carried to his final resting place by Army Generals and Service Chiefs. A 21-gun salute followed, symbolizing the military’s final tribute to the late statesman.

The remains of the revered statesman arrived in Katsina earlier on Tuesday from London, where he passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.

A Nigerian Air Force aircraft conveyed his body, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other senior government officials, to the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport.

From the airport, the casket, draped in the national colours, was transported by chopper to Daura, a journey that saw thousands line the routes, eager to catch a final glimpse of their beloved leader.

The funeral prayers and interment took place at Buhari’s private residence, attended by a select gathering of family, close associates, and Islamic clerics.
