The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 168,187 new voters have registered in Anambra State ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, 8th November 2025.
Figures derived from the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) that took place from July 8th to 20th at 326 registration centres in the State revealed that 97,832, or 58%, of the new registrants were female, while 70,355, or 42%, were males. In terms of age, 90,763 or 53.97% were young people aged 18-34. By occupational distribution, 62,157 (36.92%) were businessmen/women, while 44,243 (26.31%) were students. In terms of Persons with Disability (PWDs), 303 (24.92%) have physical impairment, followed by 207(17.02%) with Albinism.
According to a statement issued after the Commission’s weekly meeting held on Thursday, 24th July 2025 and signed by Mr. Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), the immediate next step is to display the preliminary register of the new voters for claims and objections by citizens. “This will take place in all the 326 Wards in Anambra State from Saturday, 26th July to Friday, 1st August 2025,” Olumekun noted. “Once this process is concluded, including the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), the new registrants will be added to the existing register and published on a polling unit basis ahead of the election.”
Thereafter, the IVEC Chairman stated that the Commission will announce the dates and locations for the collection of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) for new registrants and those who have applied for transfer or replacement of their lost cards. The PVCs from previous registration will also be available for collection ahead of the election.
With only 105 days to the governorship election, the statement acknowledged the tight timeline but assured all new registrants that their PVCs would be made available for collection.
It will be recalled that the CVR in the State was earlier scheduled to end on 17th July 2025 but was extended to 20th July following appeals by citizens. The total number of registered voters recorded in just two weeks is the highest number ever recorded in the State since the introduction of the CVR ahead of the 2017 governorship election.
Providing an update on Party Registration, Olumekun confirmed that the Commission has received 144 letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties. He revealed that the newly invented party registration portal, designed and built in-house by the Commission’s ICT officials, has been demonstrated and approved for deployment.
The statement noted: “The Commission is evaluating all the numerous letters of intent received so far to determine the associations that meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage.”
