In a bid to further enhance the understanding of Nigerian Army drivers on the principles and practice of defensive driving and driving etiquette, the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport has commenced the Third Defensive Driving and Driving Etiquettes Workshop for no fewer than 160 drivers from Nigerian Army formations, departments, and establishments in Abuja.
The workshop, scheduled to be held only on weekends in 2 batches, started on Saturday, 3rd May 2025, with the theme "Enhancing the Nigerian Army Drivers' Capabilities in Defensive Driving and Driving Etiquettes for Efficient Service Delivery", and will end on Sunday, 11th May 2025.
Declaring the workshop open, the Special Guest of Honour and Commander Corps of Supply and Transport, Major General Adekunle Adebayo Adeyinka ably represented by the Chief of Staff, Headquarters Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport, Brigadier General Uchenna Christian Ezeh hinted that the workshop is one of the several training workshops the Nigerian Army has scheduled for it's drivers and the initiative would improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the drivers at various levels, thereby contributing to the safety of equipment and protection of lives and properties.
Major General Adeyinka noted that over the years, the Nigerian Army has introduced new variants of vehicles into its inventory to cater for administrative and operational needs. He also observed that the cost of purchasing and maintaining these vehicles has drastically increased, thereby creating an additional burden on available resources.
In his words: "Hence, developing defensive driving capabilities helps to improve our driver's awareness of potential hazards and other road users' actions by taking proactive actions to avoid an accident.
The techniques would reduce the likelihood of a collision on the incident and can even save costs related to vehicle maintenance and fuel consumption by driving smoothly and steadily".
He urged the participants at the training workshop to make the best of the workshop through active participation in all aspects of the training.
"It is hoped that the knowledge gained from this training would produce the desired outcome and contribute to the overall successes of the NA. I also hope that others who have not had the opportunity of being nominated would also benefit from you as you transmit the knowledge you would learn to them," he stressed
"I am confident that the deliberations would be fruitful and very rewarding. We must all endeavour to use our combined wisdom and experiences in furthering this training workshop," he further emphasised. He thanked the Chief of Army Staff for approving the workshop and providing the resources required for its conduct.
Others present at the Third Defensive Driving and Driving Etiquettes Workshop 2025 were Brigadier General Isah Ahmed, Managing Director of Supply & Transport Driving School, Brigadier General Solomon Er, Commander of Army Headquarters Garrison Supply and Transport Brigade, Staff Officers from Headquarters Guards Brigade, facilitators from HQ Nigerian Army Corps of Supply & Transport and resource persons (a team of experts) from Toyota Auto Company among others.
