'Take the Fight to Bandits Very Doorstep'- Police Ministers Charge Personnel to Embrace a New Strategy of Proactivity

Minister of Police Affairs, Senator (Dr) Ibrahim Gaidam and his counterpart the Minister of State, Police Affairs, Imaam Sulaiman-Ibrahim have charged personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to embrace a new strategy - a strategy of proactivity and aggression by taking the fight to bandits very doorstep.

"We must seek out their hideouts, disrupt their operations, and dismantle their networks piece by piece. We must no longer wait for the enemy to strike, but instead, we must."

Both Ministers gave the charge today, during a working visit held on Friday 15th March, 2024 at the IGP’s Smart Conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

In their entourage is the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Abdullahi Bala, and other Management Members of the Ministry of Police Affairs.

The Minister urged officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, to embrace this strategy wholeheartedly. "Let us stand united in our resolve to take the fight to the enemy, to never back down in the face of adversity, and to emerge victorious in the battle for peace and security.

"Remember, it is only by being proactive, by taking the fight to the hideout of the terrorists and bandits, that we can weaken them and defeat them once and for all. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can secure a better future for our nation.

"Being on the defensive has only emboldened our enemies and allowed them to grow stronger. It is time for us to change the narrative, to shift the balance of power in our favor. By being proactive, by taking the fight to the hideouts of the terrorists and bandits, we can weaken them, disrupt their plans, and ultimately defeat them.

"I know that this task will not be easy. It will require courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination. But I have full faith in each and every one of you. I have seen your bravery on the frontlines in many peace keeping missions, your dedication to duty, and your unwavering commitment to protecting our people. Together, we are a force to be reckoned with, a force that cannot be defeated."

He noted that terrorist organizations have shown time and again their blatant disregard for human life by using innocent civilians as human shields to avoid being targeted in operations. In these challenging circumstances, traditional methods of engagement often lead to tragic consequences, resulting in the loss of innocent lives and further fueling the cycle of violence and hatred.

The use of anesthetic substances in such operations offers a humane and effective alternative that can significantly reduce the risk of civilian casualties. By incapacitating the terrorists without causing harm to the innocent civilians being used as shields, we can not only neutralize the threat posed by these extremists but also uphold the sanctity of human life and dignity in the face of adversity.

It is crucial for law enforcement agencies to adopt innovative and ethical approaches that prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals involved in these high-stakes operations. By utilizing anesthetic substances, we can demonstrate our commitment to upholding justice, protecting the innocent, and confronting terrorism with compassion and resolve.

The Minister reiterated the government's unwavering support for the Nigeria Police Force's ongoing efforts towards modernization and professionalism.

The Minister underscored the importance of equipping law enforcement personnel with the necessary tools, training, and resources to effectively carry out their duties while ensuring the protection of citizens' rights and safety.

Responding, the Inspector General of Police assured the Minister of the Nigeria Police Force's steadfast dedication to becoming a service-driven, people-friendly, and rule of law-compliant institution.

He highlighted ongoing initiatives within the Force aimed at enhancing community engagement, promoting transparency, and fostering accountability.

The Inspector General of Police, while appreciating the Honourable Minister and his team for the working visit which provided an opportunity to review ideas towards improved security in the country, emphasized the significance of collaboration between the Ministry of Police and the Nigeria Police Force in achieving the shared objectives of building a safer and more secure society for all.
