University Of Maiduguri Mourns It’s Chancellor, The Alaafin Of Oyo

The University of Maiduguri management have issued a statement to mourn its Chancellor His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi Ill, the Alaafin of Oyo Empire who joined his ancestors on Friday and was buried on Saturday. Alaafin, popularly known as ‘Iku Baba Yeye, was 83 years as of the time his death was announced.

The statement said:

I, Professor Aliyu Shugaba, Vice-Chancellor, University of Maiduguri, have received with deep shock, news of the demise of the Chancellor, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi Ill, the Alaafin of Oyo Empire.

Since his appointment as Chancellor of our great University, Oba Adeyemi demonstrated unparalleled passion and commitment to the development of education in Nigeria, in general, and the University of Maiduguri, in particular. He would specifically be remembered for his sterling leadership, sustained fatherly guidance, support and understanding towards peaceful coexistence and progress of the University.

As the University Community mourns his painful exit, may l, on behalf of Council, Senate, Top Management Committee, staff and students of the University, extend our condolences to the Visitor, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR; President, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria; the Government of Oyo State, members of his immediate family and the entire Oyo Kingdom.
