Women Journalists in Yobe State under the auspices of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has said that signing into law the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act is key to ending all forms violence against women in the state.
This came to the fore when Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Ahmad, Chairperson of NAWOJ in the state led other members of the Association to the Palace of Emir of Damaturu on an advocacy visit as part of 16 days activism to mark the 2021 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Mrs. Ahmad told the Monarch that they were at the Palace to seek his support and cooperation towards convincing the State Chief Executive to sign into law the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, (VAPP) passed by the State House of Assembly.
She said this became imperative considering growing effects and cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) and the need to end it in the society.
Responding, the Emir of Damaturu, Alhaji Shehu Hashimi II Ibn Umar Al-Amin El-Kanemi commended members of the pen profession for being at forefront in the fight against the age-long menace.
He also informed the visiting journalists that his emirate has since keyed into the agenda in the fight against Gender Based Violence as well as other forms of abuses against women, assuring to partner with them in the task of ending hydra-headed monster in the state.
The Emir, however, called on all critical stakeholders to join hands and fight the ugly trend of cases of rape in the society.
Similarly, the women led by their chairperson sensitized the leadership as well as members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers on the need to key into the struggle of ending GBV in the state.
