result of language difference
– Adds that actors who consider English a criterion for
measuring intelligence are stupid
In the wake of the recent tussle in Nollywood where the
non-English speaking actors, particularly the Yoruba movie
stars, have allegedly been ‘segregated’ as a result of
acting using the indigenous language, several actors have
reacted angrily to what they perceive as an unfair
treatment from their English-speaking colleagues in
Nollywood.

Mercy Aigbe was the first Yoruba actress who spoke out
about the situation as she accused the English-speaking
actors of perceived segregation and factionalism in the
Nigerian movie industry.
Another actor who has responded to the situation is
respected Yoruba actor Yomi Fash-Lanso.
“Is English our language? If I can’t speak English does
that mean I don’t have wisdom? Balderdash! Whoever
says that to you, tell that person he’s a very stupid
person,” he said angrily to Hip TV recently.
He spoke further: “Whoever says that to you, ask that
person, Is English your mother tongue? If that person says
no, then tell him you’re stupid. The White people will
speak English because it’s their language, they don’t go to
school, 75% of them are drop outs, they don’t go to
school.
“Bill Gates is a drop out, Einstein is a drop out, a lot of
them, but they speak English because it’s their language.
So I cannot be forced to speak another man’s language,
it’s stupidity on my personality. It’s high time we awaken
our consciousness and understand these things. Until we
understand that we need to uplift our culture and our
language, we will be nobody.”
The seasoned Nollywood actor sounded really peeved as
he went on to add that the Nigerian movie industry,
popularly referred to as Nollywood, lacks the requisite
structure to match with its counterparts internationally.
