He also took a swipe at Obamacare as he pointed out press secretary Jay Carney and said: 'I haven't seen him this nervous since the president said to him, "Look, just go out there and tell them the website is broken. They'll understand".
'Now, over 8 million people have signed up for Obamacare, which is impressive, until you realize that Ashley Tisdale has 12 million Twitter followers.'
Before the annual dinner WHCA President Steven Thomma had said the association was thrilled that McHale would be speaking at the centinnial celebration.
'He's sharp, funny, and just the type of comic who can navigate the unique challenge of our dinner, making fun of Democrats, Republicans and especially the news media.
'Washington can use a little good-natured ribbing,' he added.
The correspondents' dinner has often come at key moments of Obama's presidency. In 2011, the President showed up the day before special operations troops killed Osama bin Laden.

About 2,600 guests are expected to attend the event in which reality stars such as Duck Dynasty's Willie Robertson - who arrived with his bow tie hanging loose around his neck, and a USA bandana round his head - find themselves rubbing shoulders with senators.
Actresses and television personalities kept the event looking stylish, with Orange Is The New Black star Taylor Schilling in a demure navy blue long sleeved gown with lace cut out panels at the sides.
Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell made a dapper couple with Bell arriving in a midnight blue gown decorated with black flowers.
Others opted for more colorful outfits, with Katharine McPhee in a sleek coral midi-dress teamed with red heels and a scarlet clutch and Diane Lane in scarlet rather fussy number with double straps and an oversized clutch.
