Vow Arrest, Prosecution of Perpetrators and Political Sponsors
The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, political thugs and supporters against the deliberate destruction, defacement or removal of campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to rival candidates and political parties ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
The Force said it had observed with serious concern increasing incidents of political intolerance involving the destruction of campaign materials across the country, warning that anyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, ANIPR, in a press statement, strongly condemned the acts, describing them as unacceptable conduct capable of undermining democratic participation and peaceful political engagement.
According to the police, the destruction, defacement or unlawful removal of another candidate’s campaign materials may constitute malicious damage, a criminal offence under applicable laws, including Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law, which provides for the offence of mischief.
The Force emphasised that political differences, party loyalty or support for a particular candidate do not confer on anyone the right to destroy another person’s property or interfere with their constitutional right to campaign freely.
It further reiterated that all political parties and candidates, regardless of their affiliations or political status, are entitled to equal protection under the law.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has consequently directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory to adopt proactive measures to prevent such incidents, investigate reported cases and ensure the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
The IGP also warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or facilitate the destruction of campaign materials would be held accountable where evidence establishes their involvement.
The police called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully, respect the rights of others and refrain from actions capable of escalating political tension.
It stressed that Nigeria’s democratic process must not be undermined by political intolerance, intimidation or criminal conduct.
The Force declared that it would not allow political thugs and troublemakers to turn the nation’s political environment into a theatre of lawlessness, warning that anyone who violates the law would face the full consequences of their actions.
The statement concluded with a stern warning: “Be warned. Respect the law. Let democracy thrive.”
