The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called on the private sector to invest in the intelligence, creativity and productive capacity of Nigerian youths, describing them as strategic assets for strengthening national security and advancing indigenous defence technology.
Shaibu made the call during a working visit to Equipment and Protective Applications International Limited (EPAIL) in Ogun State, where he emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between the Nigerian Army, local manufacturers and private investors to develop home-grown solutions to the country's security challenges.
In a statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army Chief noted that targeted investments in youth development, mentorship and skills acquisition would not only generate employment but also encourage innovation and expand Nigeria's capacity to address emerging security threats.
He stressed that developing indigenous technological capabilities was essential to reducing dependence on foreign imports and establishing a sustainable domestic defence industrial base capable of meeting the operational requirements of the Armed Forces.
The COAS further stated that strategic partnerships between the military and local defence manufacturers would accelerate technological advancement, improve operational effectiveness and strengthen Nigeria's capacity to protect its national interests.
Commending EPAIL for developing a skilled, youthful workforce capable of producing world-class protective equipment for the military and other security agencies, Shaibu said investments in local manufacturing would enhance troop protection, operational readiness, industrial growth and technological innovation.
Earlier, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of EPAIL, Engineer Kola Balogun, commended the Army Chief for sustaining pressure on criminal elements across the country.
Balogun also reaffirmed the company's commitment to supplying quality protective equipment tailored to the operational needs of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
The visit underscores the Nigerian Army's drive to strengthen partnerships with indigenous defence manufacturers, promote local content development and build a resilient domestic defence industry in support of Nigeria's security objectives.
