The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested 70 suspects following a coordinated raid of suspected criminal blackspots around Unity Fountain and its environs in the Maitama area of Abuja, after a video alleging a robbery incident in the area went viral.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD., FCAI, ordered the immediate and comprehensive operation to identify and apprehend persons connected to the alleged robbery, as well as others operating around identified criminal flashpoints in the area.
Acting on the directive, operatives of the Maitama Division conducted coordinated raids across the identified locations, resulting in the arrest of 70 suspects. Following preliminary screening and due process, 30 suspects were released, while 40 others were retained in custody for further investigation.
The Command said the victim of the alleged robbery was subsequently invited to assist with the investigation and positively identified two of the suspects as persons he recognised from the incident. The two identified suspects, alongside the other suspects retained in custody, remain under investigation as police intensify efforts to establish their individual roles and determine whether other persons were involved.
The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements and activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08061581938.
