IGP Disu made the remarks on Friday while receiving the President and Chairman of Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Hajia Queensley Sofuratu Seghosime, mni, FCA, and her delegation at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The courtesy visit focused on strengthening collaboration between the NPF and ICAN, particularly in the areas of forensic accounting, financial investigations and the fight against complex financial and economic crimes.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the ICAN President congratulated the IGP on his appointment and commended his leadership priorities of accountability, modernisation and institutional reform.
The delegation, which included the Registrar and Chief Executive of ICAN, Dr Lanre Olasunkanmi; Chairman of the ICAN Abuja District, Mr Emeka Okoroeze; and Mr Adamu Yusuf, FCA, discussed the growing complexity of financial and economic crimes and the need to strengthen technical capacity in forensic accounting and financial investigations.
ICAN proposed a structured partnership with the Nigeria Police Force, including forensic accounting certification programmes for police investigators, specialised training for detectives and opportunities for cadets of the Police Academy to acquire the Accounting Technician Scheme for West Africa (ATSWA) certification.
The discussions also explored the establishment of a dedicated Police-ICAN response mechanism for high-profile financial fraud cases, leveraging professional accounting expertise to strengthen investigations, evidence development and prosecution.
The IGP welcomed the proposed partnership, stressing the importance of equipping police personnel with specialised skills to investigate increasingly sophisticated financial crimes.
He also proposed a joint awareness campaign by the NPF and ICAN to educate businesses and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises on fraud prevention, early detection and responsible financial practices.
The proposed collaboration is expected to strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to investigate and prosecute financial and economic crimes through specialised training, professional partnerships and the adoption of modern investigative techniques.
The Force reaffirmed its commitment to deepening accountability and professionalism while strengthening its response to emerging forms of criminality across the country.
