The Delta State Police Command has joined the rest of the world in commemorating the 2026 International Youth Day, with a call on young people to shun political and digital thuggery and embrace activities that will secure their future.
The Command said the celebration, themed “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” is in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and is aimed at strengthening police-youth engagement while encouraging young people to contribute positively to peace, security and community development.
According to a press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, the three-day programme of activities will run from Thursday, August 20 to Saturday, August 22, 2026.
The programme commenced with the official launch of the national campaign against political and digital thuggery at Coka Park, Asaba.
Activities for the second day, Friday, August 21, include a Youth Sensitisation Walkathon, scheduled to take off from the Police Headquarters on Okpanam Road, Asaba, at 7:00 a.m.
The final day, Saturday, August 22, will feature a Police-Youth Dialogue, panel discussion and special lecture at the Officers’ Mess, Police Headquarters, Okpanam Road, Asaba, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The Command said the programme would provide a platform for meaningful interaction with young people on responsible citizenship, peaceful participation, digital responsibility and crime prevention.
Special lectures will also be delivered on topics including “My Future Is Greater Than Political and Digital Thuggery,” drug abuse and cultism.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, urged young people to reject political thuggery, violence, cultism, cybercrime, hate speech and other activities capable of jeopardising their future.
He encouraged them to channel their energy, talents and creativity towards education, entrepreneurship, innovation, sports and other productive pursuits.
The Command, therefore, invited youths and members of the public to actively participate in the activities and support the campaign message:
“MY FUTURE IS GREATER THAN POLITICAL & DIGITAL THUGGERY.”
