The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who later died.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed in a statement that the arrest followed a petition alleging that the incident occurred on June 1, 2026, after the young woman travelled to Asaba at the suspect’s invitation.
According to the police, Ogbonna had reportedly offered to train the deceased in content creation through a programme he promoted on his social media platforms. Upon her arrival in Asaba, he allegedly took her to a hotel where he raped and physically assaulted her.
Police said the victim later returned home visibly distressed and narrated the alleged incident to her parents.
The statement further revealed that before her death, the young woman recorded a video in which she recounted the alleged assault and the emotional trauma she experienced afterwards. She later died after ingesting a toxic substance despite efforts to save her.
Following the petition, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Commander in Effurun to immediately commence a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
Acting on the directive, detectives launched an investigation that led to the arrest of Ogbonna. According to the police, the suspect has made useful statements during preliminary interrogation, while further investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
The Commissioner of Police assured the deceased’s family and members of the public that the investigation would be thorough, impartial and professionally conducted, stressing that no aspect of the allegations would be overlooked.
He also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable would face appropriate legal action in accordance with the law.
The police urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators to conclude their work, assuring that justice would be pursued in line with due process.
