The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-led, technology-driven and evidence-based policing, describing forensic science as a critical tool for strengthening criminal investigations and the administration of justice in Nigeria.
The Inspector-General made the declaration during a working visit to Enugu State, where he commissioned the Centre for DNA Forensics, Criminal Investigation and Biotechnology (DeFOCI), a facility designed to enhance the use of scientific methods in modern policing.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, the IGP described the Centre as a strategic national asset that would significantly improve criminal investigations, strengthen the justice system and advance the adoption of forensic science in policing across the country.
He commended the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Godfrey Okoye University, the DNA Learning Center and other partners whose collaboration led to the establishment of the Centre.
The Inspector-General noted that the facility would provide opportunities for forensic research, capacity building and institutional collaboration while supporting investigations into serious crimes such as homicide, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, cybercrime, human trafficking and sexual offences.
During an address to officers and personnel of the Enugu State Police Command, IGP Disu commended their dedication and sacrifices in maintaining peace and security across the state.
He urged officers to remain vigilant, strengthen intelligence gathering, embrace continuous professional development and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, integrity and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties.
The police chief also reassured personnel of the Force’s commitment to improving their welfare through enhanced training, better operational capacity and the provision of modern policing equipment.
He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to maintain zero tolerance for corruption, misconduct, abuse of office and other unethical practices capable of eroding public confidence in the institution.
The Inspector-General reiterated that the Force remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s forensic capabilities and expanding institutional partnerships to ensure policing remains responsive to the country’s evolving security challenges.
