The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is driving a new era of policing anchored on professionalism, technology, accountability, and intelligence-led operations, according to the Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie O. E. Iniedu.
In a statement, CSP Iniedu described the appointment of IGP Disu as a defining moment for Nigeria’s internal security architecture, noting that his more than three decades of policing experience, academic accomplishments, and operational leadership have positioned him to lead far-reaching reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the statement, IGP Disu combines extensive field experience with strong academic credentials, holding advanced degrees in Criminology, Security Psychology, Forensic Investigation, and Public Administration. He has consistently advocated research-driven policing, stressing that modern law enforcement requires specialists in forensic science, cybersecurity, and data analytics to build a scientific and intelligence-led police force.
The statement highlighted the Inspector-General’s distinguished operational record, recalling his leadership of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad between 2015 and 2021, where he introduced innovative approaches to urban policing. It also cited his service as Commander of the Intelligence Response Team and as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, describing him as a leader with vast experience in managing complex security challenges.
CSP Iniedu further noted that accountability remains one of the hallmarks of the Inspector-General’s leadership. Following the tragic incident in Effurun, IGP Disu ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers found culpable within 72 hours, declaring that “No uniform is a license to kill,” a move the Force said demonstrated its commitment to transparency and justice.
The statement added that the Nigeria Police Force is undergoing significant reforms under the current leadership, including the deployment of technology-driven policing strategies, predictive policing initiatives, artificial intelligence training, and the restructuring of the Force Intelligence Department to improve operational effectiveness.
The Inspector-General’s recent intervention in Osun State was also cited as evidence of his proactive leadership. Amid rising political violence that reportedly claimed more than 20 lives, IGP Disu convened a stakeholders’ meeting where he warned political actors against violence, stating that elections should not be treated as warfare.
He directed the arrest of political thugs and their sponsors irrespective of their status, insisting that no individual involved in criminal acts would escape justice. He also reaffirmed the sanctity of human life, assured residents of impartial policing, ordered the reorganisation of anti-cultism teams, and cautioned parents and political leaders against encouraging thuggery.
The Force maintained that under IGP Disu’s leadership, the Nigeria Police Force is being repositioned into a modern, technology-driven, and citizen-focused institution capable of addressing contemporary security threats while strengthening public confidence in law enforcement.
