The Delta State Police Command has intensified efforts to eliminate illegal roadblocks and unauthorized revenue collection on highways, arresting nine suspects during a statewide enforcement operation aimed at restoring sanity on major roads across the state.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement, saying the exercise was carried out in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive to rid Nigerian highways of extortion and other criminal activities.
According to the statement, the enforcement operation commenced on Friday, July 24, targeting notorious flashpoints where illegal toll collection and roadblocks have hindered the free movement of motorists and exposed road users to harassment.
The operation led to the arrest of nine suspects at strategic locations, including the Head Bridge axis at the Delta–Anambra boundary and the Benin–Asaba Expressway near Agbor.
The police said all the suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Delta State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to restoring safety and order on highways across the state, stressing that similar operations will be extended to other parts of Delta to ensure motorists and commuters can travel without intimidation, illegal levies or extortion.
The Command also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers by providing useful information and supporting ongoing efforts to keep the state’s highways safe and free from criminal activities.
